On October 17th, 2009, Canada Post will begin issuing a series of stamps commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Montreal Canadiens. The series of 4 stamps will feature Maurice Richard, Jean Béliveau, Guy Lafleur, and a close-up of the retired #9 jersey belonging to «Rocket» Richard.

Winner of 24 Stanley Cups, the Montreal Canadiens is now the only NHL team in Quebec. It is the oldest continuously operating hockey team and the only one to predate the founding of the NHL. The Canadiens, affectionately known as the «Habs» is one of the most successful hockey teams in North America. The team used to play at the Montreal Forum, but now plays at the Bell Centre. The team also has 42 former members inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Three of the four new stamps feature Motionstamp technology and when moved and tilted around, seem to actually play a movie. The three stamps commemorate the scoring of the 500th goal of three Canadiens legends: Maurice Richard, Jean Béliveau and Guy Lafleur. On each side of the souvenir sheet lenticular technology also permits the viewing of all 15 of the team’s retired jerseys. The fourth stamp shows a close-up of the #9 jersey on a permanent domestic-rate issue.

  1. I have found 2 varieties of these stamps, on the back side the impression of the printing co and other info on the left side are doubled on one stamp to the right and on the second one to the left.
As a result the bar code could not be read at the post office and the pictures of the players are a lot darker as well as the blue characters on top being of a darker blue.
    Keep an eye open.
