Les oblit\u00e9rations prenaient souvent la forme de cercles, ovales, barres lign\u00e9es parall\u00e8les ou ondul\u00e9es. \u00c0 la fin du 19e si\u00e8cle, certains employ\u00e9s de la poste ont m\u00eame cr\u00e9\u00e9 leurs propres conceptions artistiques appel\u00e9es \u00ab\u2009fancy cancels\u2009\u00bb, litt\u00e9ralement \u00ab\u2009oblit\u00e9rations de fantaisie\u2009\u00bb (voir image). Autrefois, une oblit\u00e9ration \u00e9tait tamponn\u00e9e \u00e0 la main par un employ\u00e9 du bureau de poste, aujourd\u2019hui, le processus est automatis\u00e9 et les oblit\u00e9rations sont imprim\u00e9es sur les timbres avec un jet d\u2019encre.<\/p>\n<p>Un cachet de poste sert \u00e0<strong> indiquer l\u2019heure, la date et l\u2019endroit d\u2019o\u00f9 la lettre a \u00e9t\u00e9 mise \u00e0 la poste<\/strong>.
