On February 21, 2011, Canada Post will begin issuing a series of stamps featuring a Canadian artist. This year’s honouree is Daphne Odjig, a Canadian artist of Aboriginal descent. Ms. Odjig was born in 1919 to Dominic Odjig, of the Potawatomi tribe and Joyce Peachy, an English war bride.
Daphne showed artistic ability at a young age and began painting seriously as an adult, learning her craft from books and magazines. Her stylized approach and use of colour make her paintings and drawings stand out. Her solo show at the National Gallery of Canada was the first ever by a First Nation woman artist.
This year’s stamps feature three of her paintings: Pow-wow Dancer, Spiritual Renewal and Pow-wow.
